Why Ohio is hard on garage doors

Most of our calls arrive on the first cold night

Steel contracts when it gets cold. A torsion spring that was quietly near the end of its life all summer will very often break during the first hard freeze of the season, which is why our phone rings hardest the morning after temperatures drop.

Ohio adds two more problems that warmer states never deal with: road salt, which your car drags into the garage all winter and which eats the bottom section and the hardware, and water that freezes under the bottom seal and welds the door to the slab overnight.

  • Springs failing on the first freeze after a mild fall
  • Doors frozen to the slab, then torn when the opener is forced
  • Grease thickening in the cold until the opener strains on every cycle
  • Road salt corroding the bottom section, rollers and hinges
  • Uninsulated doors turning an attached garage into a heat leak

Service areas

Eight metros, four very different climates

A door in the Cleveland snowbelt and a door on a Cincinnati hillside fail for completely different reasons. Our crews work the region they live in.

Common questions

Straight answers

My door is frozen shut. What do I do?

Do not keep pressing the opener. The door is stuck to the slab by ice, and the opener will either strip its drive gear or tear the bottom section away. Break the ice seal first with warm water or a heat gun kept moving, then open by hand and clear the water so it cannot refreeze.

Why do springs always break in winter?

Steel contracts in cold, which adds stress to a spring already near the end of its cycle life. The cold does not cause the wear, it just picks the moment.

Are you really open 24 hours?

Yes. A door that will not close in an Ohio January is not something that waits until morning.

Is an insulated door worth it here?

In Ohio, yes, and more so than almost anywhere. If the garage is attached or has a room above it, an uninsulated door is a hole in your heated envelope every winter.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Estimates are free with no obligation, and we quote the full price before starting any work.
