Columbus splits neatly for our work. The older neighborhoods, Clintonville, German Village, Old Towne East, Grandview and Bexley, are largely pre-war brick and frame homes with narrow single-car garages, many of them detached and set back along an alley. Those jobs are usually about the structure: wood jambs softened after decades of freeze and thaw, and openings that were never a standard modern size.
The suburbs are the opposite. Hilliard, New Albany, Powell and the newer parts of Dublin went up from the 1990s onward with double doors and builder-grade openers, all installed within a few years of each other. Those units are reaching the end of their service life at the same time, which is why we replace so many of them.
Detached garages are their own problem in winter
A detached garage in Columbus is unheated by definition, so the door and hardware sit at outdoor temperature all winter. Grease stiffens, springs contract, and a door that works fine in October gets sluggish by December and fails in January. Detached garages also tend to have older openers with no rolling-code security and no floor-level safety sensors.

Where we work around Columbus
Straight answers
My garage is detached and unheated. Does that change anything?
It does. Everything sits at outdoor temperature all winter, so lubrication matters far more. The wrong grease turns solid in the cold and the opener fights it on every cycle. We use a cold-rated lubricant and check the balance so the springs, not the motor, are carrying the door.
My house is from the 1920s. Will a modern door fit?
Usually, but the framing matters more than the opening. Older Columbus garages have wood jambs that have been through a century of freeze and thaw, and the bottom two feet are often soft. We check the jambs before quoting, so if they need rebuilding we say so before you order a door.
The door froze to the concrete. Did I damage it?
Possibly, if the opener was run while it was stuck. The two things that usually give are the drive gear and the bottom section where the seal is bonded to the ice. Both are repairable.
