Ohio winter advice

Road Salt Is Quietly Destroying Your Garage Door

Ohio treats its roads heavily, and it works. The side effect is that every time you pull into the garage between November and March you are bringing brine home and parking it against the one part of your house that is made of thin steel and moving parts.

What actually happens overnight

Salt-laden slush drips off the vehicle and pools on the slab. Some of it evaporates and leaves a salt film. That film attracts moisture from the air and holds it against metal, which turns ordinary rusting into a process that runs continuously rather than only when things are wet.

What fails first, in order

  • The bottom section. Steel doors rust from the inside of the bottom panel where water sits and where you never look. By the time it shows on the outside, the panel is finished.
  • Lift cables. The dangerous one. Cables corrode from the inside out, so a cable that looks acceptable can be close to failure. Look for rust staining and individual strands standing out from the bundle.
  • Rollers and hinges. Salt gets into the bearing races. Rollers stop rolling and start sliding, which is the grinding noise people describe.
  • Spring winding cones. Corrosion seizes the set screws. When we cannot back them out the spring has to be cut off, which turns a routine job into a longer one.

Three things that genuinely help

Rinse the bottom of the door a few times over the winter. Same principle as rinsing a boat trailer. It removes the salt film before it can do sustained work. Pick a day above freezing and clear the water afterward.

Specify galvanized cables on replacement. The upcharge is small and the lifespan difference in a salted climate is not.

Keep the slab clear. Squeegee standing meltwater toward the driveway rather than letting it sit under the door. This also prevents the door freezing down, which is the other half of the same problem.

When to have the cables looked at

If your door is more than five winters old and the cables have never been inspected, that is the single check worth doing. Not glanced at from across the garage, but inspected strand by strand where they wrap the drums. It is the difference between a planned replacement and a door that drops.
