Snow coming off Lake Erie does not fall evenly. The snowbelt east of Cleveland can take several feet in a stretch of days while the west side gets a dusting, and that snow gets plowed and shovelled into piles that end up against the bottom of the door.
Then it melts a little, runs under the bottom seal and refreezes overnight. By morning the door is bonded to the slab. Someone presses the button, the opener pulls against a door that is not going anywhere, and either the drive gear strips or the bottom section tears away from the panel above it.
